Carlos Mortensen Wins Third WPT Title

Carlos Mortensen is the only player who has won both the main event of World Series of Poker and the WPT Championship title during his career. After winning the WPT Hollywood Poker Open he also ties with Gus Hansen for the most WPT victories ever, both having three WPT victories under their belt.

The the WPT champ likes to play with chips.

The turnout of the tournament was quite small, as only 143 players started the tournament. Mortensen started the final table with a chiplead, but after three players who started the final with smallest stacks (Jerry Payne, Ravi Raghavan and Chris Bell) were eliminated, remaining trio (Mortensen, Frank Calo and Mike Mustafa) was almost even.

After 30 hands of three-handed play Mortensen found a pair of threes in his pocket and raised from the small blind. Frank Calo called from the big blind with 5-4 of diamond and after a flop of 5-4-2 Calo raised all in and Mortensen called. Mortensen, who had Calo covered, needed a six, an ace or a three to win the pot. Blank turn didn’t change anything, but a three on the river gave Mortensen a set and Calo was out in third place.

The decisive hand of the heads-up came when Mustafa flopped top two pair and moved all in after a check-raise from Mortensen. Mortensen showed a flopped straight and Mustafa was drawing for 4-outer. The turn and the river were blanks and the stack of Mustafa fell down to only three big blinds.

Mustafa managed to double up twice, but eventually he ran out of luck when Mortensen made a flush on the river with a K-T against Mustafa’s pair of sixes. After 138 hands of play in the final table, Mortensen took home his third WPT bracelet.
