The winner of Omaha Hi/Lo, Roland de Wolfe, did not only win the first WSOP-bracelet of his career. At the same time he became the second person who has ever conquered the “poker triplet”. From his trophy room can be found WPT, EPT and WSOP-trophies. Before de Wolfe, only Gavin Griffin has done the same.
“I am aware of the situation, this is great” he said. De wolfe got to start the final table from a good position with a healthy stack, but had to truly struggle for the bracelet with the favored player, Scott Clements.
Aggressive play rewarded
Scott Clements is said to be one of the very best Omaha HI/LO players in the world. Clements started from the chiplead and used his stack to his own advantage. He took a pot after another, thus increasing his lead.
“I learned the value of aggressiveness from Scott” said de Wolfe. “He began the day in chiplead and dominated the table. He didnt just play the nuts, he was very active”
Final table dominated by Clements
First person to be steamrolled over by Clements was Antony Lellouche. After he fell out from the tournament, a fast final table seemed like a probable outcome. The third hour of the final was especially cruel for plenty of players: Armando Ruiz II, Rober Campbell, Andy Black and Alex Kravchenko all were moved from the table to join the audience.
After them only 4 players more were seated, and after de Wolfe dropped Robert Cambell it seemed like Wolfe and Brett Richey will be battling for the second place behind Clements.
3-handed comeback
Roland de Wolfe managed to drag himself back to the tournament lead while the game was running three handed. Then happened something no one could’ve anticipated. De wolfe and Clements played monster pot and in the end de Wolfe shew the stronger hand. As the result of this the favored Clements moved behind the rail and De wolfe continued to heads-up in a crushing 4:1 chiplead.
Heads-Up versus Richey didn’t last long, de Wolfe took the first bracelet of his career and $246,616 in prize money. Getting his name on the very short triplet winner list.
Where to next?
Before this tournament de Wolfe hasn’t really played PL Omaha Hi/Lo. “I believe I’ve played PLO-8 before this tournament less than an hour. I’ve played quite a lot Hi/Lo limit and Pot Limit Omaha, I just tried to put those two games together.”
For the future the man has clear plans: “I want to be the first player to achieve two EPT-victories. I want also to win the Main Event. Everyone wants to win the main event!”
“I play a lot of World Series tournaments. I’m after all only 6 bracelets behind Ivey.”
