John Juanda was the chip leader going into final table of WSOPE, presented by Betfair Poker, but the two Russians, Stanislav Alekhin and Ivan Demidov, took his lead away early, only to see Juanda fight back and win his fourth bracelet. Juanda was obviously incredibly happy about his victory and just couldn’t stop smiling. The first prize money was £868,800.
The final came to the end in the hand number 484, when Alekhin tried to double up with A9, but Juanda hit the flop, six-six-two, hard with his K6 and the winner was almost sealed. A queen on the turn left Alekhin no outs and the river gave Juanda another six to seal the victory with quads.
“This is the longest final table that I have ever played,” said Juanda in a post-victory interview.
When asked about his opponent, Stanislav Alekhin, Juanda remarked, “He had me down a couple of times. I was pretty sure and confident that I was going to win. I didn’t give up. I have to give the last two players a lot of credit.”
Stanislav Alekhin, who received his awkward nickname “The Russian” from the Phil Helmuth, gave Juanda a great battle and lead most of the time, but eventually had to bow down to Juanda. Maybe the prize for second place finish £533,950 will heal some of his wounds after coming so close to winning.
Other Russian in the final table, Ivan Demidov, eventually finished third. We’ll see if he can do better in the WSOP final. Even though, he and Alekhin are a new breed of up and goming young Russian poker players and I’m sure we will see more Russians coming in to poker scene.
