Here are a few memorable hands from the World Series of Poker:
Easy call…
During the 19th event of the WSOP in 2002, a $1500 no limit Hold’em tournament, the final table consisted of a lot of big names from past and present, including Layne Flack, Johnny Chan, T.J Cloutier and Carlos Mortensen. The following hand had both players hit quads of 4s and 10s.
Layne Flack (195 000 chips)
Phillip Marmostein (80 000 chips)
L.F raises to 15 000 pre flop with “10d 10h”
P.M. calls on the button with “4h 4c”
Both blinds fold
The flop comes “10s 10c 8c”
L.F checks the flop
P.M. also checks the flop
The turn card is the “4d”
L.F bets 15 000
P.M calls 15 000
The river is the “4s”
L.F moves all in
P.M calls instantly.
Slow playing does work very effectively sometimes. His opponent must have been the happiest man in the world until he realizes that Flack has the real nuts!
Nut flush vs. Second nut flush
In 1979 Hal Fowler became the first amateur to win the WSOP. He took a third of the chip leader’s stack when the following hand occurred.
Hal Fowler (204 000 chips)
Bobby Hoff (336 000 chips)
Both players see a flop.
The flop “9cJh7d”
B.H bets and H.F calls
The turn “2d”
B.H bets and H.F calls
The river “Qd”
H.F. moves all in, B.H instantly calls.
H.F. holds Ad8d, B.H holds Kd6d
A classic situation on a float play, where Hal Fowler makes the nuts and gets paid off by his opponent when they both hit the runner-runner flushes - onlyt that Hal has the real nuts against Hoffs second nuts. Hoff must have thought he would win the pot for sure.
